Girl at the Window – REVIEW

Girl at the Window – REVIEW

Audiences should realise soon after the opening credits that this is quintessentially a film which should never have been made.

An Australian psychological drama of sorts the story delves on a young student (Ella Newton) who believes her next door neighbour is allegedly the ‘clockwork killer’ (Vince Colosimo) a serial killer who goes around the neighbourhood abducting, torturing, and murdering the young locals.

Naturally nobody believes her, including her mother (Radha Mitchell), and the assailant has her on his ‘to murder list’. Is she justifiably a vigilante or just a wannabee paranoid teenage amateur sleuth?

A major problem with this film lies in the story development, as it moves too quickly. There’s no reason for the girl to suspect her neighbour of foul play so soon. There are just so many black holes in the story and highly improbable but convenient elements in the plot to carry the film forward.

You’ll realise that this drama, more aptly slasher film, has failed on all accounts when audiences laugh in all the wrong spots. As the ‘intensity’ builds so does the laughter. Stereotyped actions by the damsel in distress such as mildly scarring the murderer then dropping the knife and escaping into the dark forest are nonsensical but trademarks of films in this genre.

There are some unsettling graphic murder scenes and jump scare moments, but it’ s too little too late, leaving audiences questioning whether this flick was inadvertently a comedy.

The cheesiness oozes ever so freely. The pitiful script, the direction and the cringeworthy acting in the finale as the murderer is unveiled in one of the most hilariously unrealistic finales ever filmed! Yes, Girl At The Window is a shocker but for all the wrong reasons!

The question here isn’t whether the protagonist will outlive the clockwork killer but more importantly why prominent actress Radha Mitchell signed on to co-star in such a ludicrous and forgettable film.
