6 Festivals – REVIEW

6 Festivals – REVIEW

A hit at this year’s Sydney Film Festival, this low budget Aussie coming of age film tells the story of a dying teenager who finds solace with his friends at music festivals.

James (Rory Potter) is suffering from terminal brain cancer and decides along with his two best friends Summer (Yasmin Honeychurch) and Maxie (Ramus King) to go on a road trip to 6 music festivals, as a means of escaping reality.

Their plan is to attend music festivals in Queensland, NSW and Canberra, but does James have enough time to attend all 6 before he succumbs to his illness?

Filmed at actual music festivals this uplifting and at times poignant story about mateship and the acceptance of one’s fate, also touches on drug abuse and should appeal to younger audiences who have a love for live bands and music festivals.

Some of the Aussie acts that participate in this film include Dune Rats, Ruby Fields, Kobie Dee, Flip G, and Jerome Farah.

Youth culture is also explored, the anticipation of arriving at the festivals, the road and surfing trips, creating long lasting memories, the alcohol, the partying and ultimately the strong bond that tightens between them, leading up to the realisation of James’s inevitable demise.

The capable young cast is headed by Rory Potter who delivers an impressive performance as the teenage who finds it difficult to accept his looming death.

The resonating theme that filters through is the aching reality of the fragility of life. The finale is tearful headed by James telling his friends, “May your lives remain a music playing, festival slaying, and dream chasing adventure.”
