Ukrainian Ballet – united in art
How on earth were the Ukrainians able to send a ballet to Australia amid the horrors of war?
The United Ukrainian Ballet (UUB) comprises award-winning dancers from Ukraine’s best ballet companies, including the National Opera of Ukraine, Kharkiv Opera Theatre and Odessa Opera and Ballet Theatre.
All the dancers can tell a harrowing story of how they escaped the horrors of Putin’s vicious assault on Ukraine to join the UUB under the artistic direction of Igone de Jonge, a former prima ballerina of the Dutch National Ballet.
And what will the company be performing?
Disappointingly, it is Swan Lake, the quintessential Russian ballet, although there may be more to this choice than meets the eye. Did you know that Tchaikovsky was of both Russian and Ukrainian descent. Make of this what you will.
