Toilet humour with class
In a proud first for Australian theatre, an all-trans and gender-diverse troupe has been assembled to play in Overflow, a new play by Travis Alabanza, one of the UK’s most prominent trans writers.
Predicted to be a “future classic” by one critic, the play has been described as “an hilarious tour of women’s bathrooms [toilets?] Who is allowed in and who is kept out”.
Director and multi-disciplinary artist, Dino Dimitriadis, who is also trans, has previously directed edgy, sometimes confrontational plays including Cleansed and Sydney Theatre Award-winning Angels in America Parts I & II at the Old Fitz, Lady Tabouli at the National Theatre of Parramatta and De Profundis with Paul Capsis.
Overflow has a particular significance for them.
“I can’t tell you what it means to be able to arrive at this moment; for trans people to be in the driving seat, telling these remarkable new stories on our terms, with our lived experiences,” says Dimitriadis.
Actor/writer/activist, Janet Anderson plays lead role, Rosie, a young trans woman, who distracts herself with memories of bathroom encounters, drunken heart-to-hearts by dirty sinks and friendships forged in front of crowded mirrors.
This is an Australian premier for Darlinghurst Theatre, who picks up the show after its successful season at London’s Bush Theatre.
