NSW Police have released CCTV footage to assist in the investigation of a man who allegedly turned on four fire hydrants in an Ultimo building on June 30.

The heritage listed building on Jones Street sustained large amounts of water damage after the hydrants were turned on, with repairs costing an estimated $50,000.

Police have released video footage of a man described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 180cm tall, of thin build, with short dark hair. He was captured on video walking down Wattle Street at 8:40pm on the night of the incident.

Police have not yet revealed information on which building was damaged when the man allegedly turned on the fire hydrants.

They urge anyone with information on the man in the CCTV to come forward by contacting crimestoppers and assist with the investigation.
