A man has been shot by police in Erskineville this morning after he allegedly drove a vehicle straight towards officers. NSW Police said in a statement that just before 10am officers stopped a Ford Falcon with two men inside that was reported stolen from West Pennant Hills earlier in the month.

Police say the 38 year-old passenger fled from the car and was pursued by police on foot. He was arrested a short time later and taken to Mascot Police Station.

Car found just minutes away, driver treated for gunshot wounds

After the passenger fled, the driver of the vehicle drove the car towards officers, and was the shot at by police, before driving away. The Ford was located at a service station on the Hume Highway soon after, where the 38-year old man was found.

The driver was then treated at the scene for gunshot wounds by paramedics, before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred hospital under police guard. He was in stable condition when taken to hospital.

Police say two separate crime scenes have been established to investigate the incidents, with the investigation being subject to independent review.
