“By popular request,” Opera Bites is staging Carmen as a matinee  to be performed in the architecturally striking  1894 Embassy Conference Centre in the heart of Sydney.

Opera Bites, a boutique opera company, is known for its condensed versions of popular opera performed in non-theatre spaces.

Rae Levien, co-founder and soprano, told me that the company utilises the ambiance and features of such venues. It has performed in a variety of settings from pubs and historic houses to the outback, but the group loves finding Sydney’s hidden architectural gems such as the Embassy Conference Centre, with its excellent acoustics.

“Our shows, which are fully costumed and propped, offer the audience an intimate experience which is quite different to anything they will find in a theatre,” Levien says.

“This 90-minute adaptation of ‘Carmen’ is sung in English with dialogue,” she says, “and features a cast of six singers who perform all the roles.  This allows Opera Bites to perform the best-loved numbers from ‘Carmen’ within the full context of the storyline, rather than just a highlights package.”

Pianist and long-time Musical Director Zsuzsa Giczy will provide accompaniment on piano.

No doubt, everyone from the regular opera-goer to the novice will enjoy this production!

August 13, 2pm, Embassy Conference Centre, 826 George St, Chippendale; $50 + bf; Tickets and info:
