South Maroubra car park will be home to the newest ‘pop-up pedal park‘ run by Randwick Council, and will open to the public this Thursday. The car park will be temporarily turned into a contained space for kids and families to ride their bikes, scooters and skateboards, and have a safe space to develop riding skills.
The free pop-up pedal parks were initially started in 2020 when beach carparks were closed for Covid-19 lockdowns. Clovelly car park and Chifley Reserve car park were the first locations to run the pop-ups, and were deemed a success after a council community feedback report showed public support.
Randwick Mayor Launches Pop-Up
The South Maroubra pop-up will be officially opened by Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker, who says that the idea has seen “great community support.”
“It’s wonderful to be able to build on it and expand the pedal parks so more kids can take part in the time-tested fun of riding a bike or skateboard[ing] with your friends.”
Over the success of previous pop-up pedal parks in 2021, council introduced skill building ramps, tunnels and other riding accessories for the community to enjoy.
The pop-up pedal park at South Maroubra Car park will open on Thursday June 9th from 3:30pm to 5:00pm.
