The Inner West Council is running several cultural and educational events to celebrate National Reconciliation Week in the community. The events include a movie screening of a documentary from First Nations perspectives about Indigenous incarceration in Australia, called ‘Incarceration Nation’.

Also included in the agenda is a night walk in which Wiradjuri astrophysicist Kirsten Banks will lead an educational walk through Tempe Recreation Reserve, and will provide “Aboriginal perspectives and stories of the stars.”

Peter Lucas, Chair of the Reconciliation organisation ANTaR Inner West said to CityHub that a night walk “sounds excellent, because you can always learn from our First Nation’s people.”

ANTaR Inner West provides advocacy for First Nations rights and reconciliation efforts in the Inner West area. Lucas said that this year’s Reconciliation Week is about how the community can “move forward to recognise the voice of the Uluru statement.”

Golf Tournament to to be held in July

In addition to this week’s events, a reconciliation Golf Tournament will be held later in the year during NAIDOC week at Marrickville Golf Club as a continuation of Reconciliation Week.

The annual dates for National Reconciliation Week, from May 27th to June 3rd, were chosen to commemorate two significant dates in reconciliation history in Australia; the landmark 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision which addressed Indigenous land rights.

This year’s theme ‘Be Brave. Make Change’ is a part of reconciliation Australia’s “challenge to all Australians- individuals, families, communities, organisations and government—to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation.”
