Jubilate Singers Present Mozart’s Requiem

Sydney’s Jubilate singers are proud to present Mozart Requiem, a community choir event, at Holy Trinity Anglican Church at Dulwich Hill, Sydney, on Sunday, June 5.
Joanna Brooke, Musical Director of Jubilate Singers, told City Hub, “Requiem is vibrant and full of changing colours and tones, powerfully illustrating the sacred Roman Catholic text. It connects with audiences through its universal themes of grief, loss, anger, and transcending love.”
The Requiem, which was Mozart’s final work, was left unfinished before his death. “The story of this work’s completion is shrouded in drama and historical myths, adding to its effervescence and intrigue,” she added.
The performance will also be accompanied by a collaboration of emerging and talented musicians such as players from Symphonia Jubilate and friends from Sydney’s freelance community and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. The choir includes soloists such as David Greco and Jenny Duck-Chong. Joanna Brooke and Alexander Caldwell also join them.
“For us as a choir, the significance of this work is deeply personal. We began rehearsals at the beginning of 2020 and have persevered through two lockdowns and over eight months in total of online singing, with every kind of rehearsal variation you can imagine in between – from outdoor singing, to distancing, to rotations of five singers at a time to picnic singalongs!” said Ms Brooke.
By acknowledging the hardship everyone went through for the last two years, the concert will create “a space for healing and hope.”
“A special aspect of this concert is its intergenerational, educational ethos. We proudly have collaborated with a number of musicians and groups to bring together a dynamic combination of emerging and experienced musicians,” Ms Brooke told City Hub.
Staged in the vivid acoustic of Holy Trinity Church, the audience will be immersed in a rich choral sound. The fundraising concert for Jubilate will also feature their friends from Tasmania, St. Matthew’s Singers, brought together by the brilliant Susan Reppion-Brooke – a pillar of Australian music education.
“It is truly a special community, and we could not think of a more powerful and inspiring work than Mozart’s Requiem In D for us to acknowledge a challenging two years and look forward together to our next chapter as a choir.”
Part of the inner west community since 1994, Jubilate Singers perform at chorister’s funerals and weddings, visit members in hospital with uplifting recordings of past concerts, and always keep an open-door policy. A community choir based in Dulwich Hill, they rehearse at Holy Trinity Church from 7-9PM on Monday nights.
