The Children’s International Film Festival (CHIFF) returns for its fourth season with a program of incredible films from around the world. The selection of shorts, features, animation, CGI, and live-action films cater for kids aged 3 to 16. From simple non-verbal animations through to live-action light horror, and everything in-between, there’s something even the fussiest cinema-goer will enjoy (adults included).

The 21 films in CHIFF 2022 are all Australian premieres and have been chosen from prestigious international film festivals including Berlin, Toronto, and Seattle. Here’s a handful of films that will give you an idea of what’s on offer:

In King (Belgium/France), Inés, 12, and her 15-year-old brother, Alex, suddenly find themselves in possession of a lion cub that has escaped from the airport after being illegally smuggled by traffickers. Inés and Alex they are going to return King (the cub) to Africa somehow. Meanwhile, the smugglers are keen to get their valuable lion back any way they can. This live-action/CGI film is fast and exciting, with some surprising twists and turns.

The delightful Mironins (Belgium/Spain) is a comical cartoon based on three little characters, Ro, Low, and Blu, who are coloured shapes from a Miró painting that come to life after the museum closes. Arrive early for Miró inspired face-painting in the foyer. How surreal!

Adapted from the ballet by Delibes, Coppelia (Belgium/Germany/Netherlands) is a stunning live-action/animation fusion. With a young cast of dancers and gorgeously painted, vintage-look sets, this film is a beautiful introduction to classical music and ballet. Dress your child as a dancer and they could win a prize on arrival.

There are many pre-film activities happening in the foyer, including painting and craft, slime making, recycling art workshops and dress-ups.

CHIFF is on at Randwick Ritz, 45 St Pauls St, Randwick from May 28 to June 13
