Downtown Abbey: A New Era delivers exactly what all the fans want – a period piece (the late 20s) with all of the drama, plot twists and wholesome fun, yet still managing to further the story in a fresh way, without any tiredness.

The story unfolds as some members of the Crawley family travel to the south of France to seek answers about their grandmothers’ past. Meanwhile, the rest of the family stay to host some of Hollywood’s most successful actors, starring in a film set at Downton itself.

There is use of the usual easy plot line with sprinklings of small Easter eggs throughout. Eventually all is uncovered, in the satisfying way we all know and love when it comes to Julian Fellowes and his work.

With the usual, beautiful cinematography depicting the house itself, the scenes in the south of France and those sweeping opulent scenes complimenting the wealth of the family, the film is filled with vivid, colourful and engaging sights to take in.

In addition to this, the ins and outs of the servants below and realities of the time, there is a real heartwarming dose of pathos to balance everything out. This is a film not to miss.
