The Ukrainian Council of NSW has announced a spate of rallies to take place this week in protest of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with the organisation saying that a “significant event” may also be held at the Opera House over the next seven days.

It comes as the Ukraine national flag was flown over Sydney Town Hall on the weekend, in a move that Sydney lord mayor Clover Moore said was in “solidarity” with the “appalling and terrifying invasion” of Ukraine.

In its most recent newsletter, the Ukrainian Council of NSW commended the Australian Government’s move to support the provision of lethal weapons to Ukraine in their fight against Russia, while also pleading with people to support Ukraine in whatever way possible, saying that the country and its people are in its “hour of need”.

It comes after Ukraine was invaded last week following the amassing of Russian troops on the border, which had sparked concerns of an imminent war.

According to a status report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Human Affairs published yesterday, there have been at least 240 civilian casualties during the conflict, with at least 64 being killed. It added that the actual figures were likely to be “considerably higher” than what was reported.

On Saturday, pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian demonstrators clashed outside the Sydney Russian Consulate, which is based in Woollahra, attracting a police presence to the area.

Rallies have been scheduled at Martin Place every day this week, with times varying from midday, 2:00pm and 6:00pm.
