Inner West Council has opened applications for the GreenWay Community Forum, in a move to seek support, advice and advocacy from the local community on the long-term infrastructure project.

First conceived in the early 2000s, the GreenWay is a 5.8 kilometre-long travel corridor that links the Cooks River in Earlwood with the Parramatta River at Iron Cove.

Although progress was stymied by state government inaction early in its development, the project has since expanded at a steady pace thanks to outspoken community support.

Jennifer Kent, a member of the ‘Friends of the Greenway’ told City Hub last September that the corridor provides an “opportunity for the community to enjoy green open space” and “bush care sites”.

Following the route of the former Dulwich Hill Goods Line, the corridor is currently in a partial state of completion and winds along Hawthorne Canal and the temporarily closed Inner West Light Rail Line.

Recently completed sections of the corridor include various landscaping and safer crossing upgrades in Dulwich Hill last month and an upgrade to the Dobroyd Point Seawall in August 2021.

The GreenWay Community Forum intends to “identify opportunities for the implementation of community programs and partnerships” and respond to “local and regional issues” to do with the project. Applications to join remain open until February 27.
