An 18-year-old provisional licence holder from Chippendale has been charged with serious traffic offences after a crash in Haymarket on Saturday morning, which also saw a male passenger flee the scene on foot.

At about 4:20 am on Saturday morning, a vehicle collided with a tree before flipping and landing on its side at the intersection of Quay and Thomas Street in Haymarket.

Officers from Sydney Crime Scene, who were in Haymarket on an unrelated matter, witnessed the event before the Sydney City Police Area Command also attended the scene.

The driver – who holds a provisional licence, and is subjected to a zero-alcohol limit – returned a positive roadside breath test and was taken to the nearby Day Street Police Station, where he returned a 0.161 alleged reading.

His licence was suspended, and he was charged with high range prescribed content of alcohol and negligent driving. He will appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on 23 March and was granted conditional bail. There were no reports of injuries and the police are not looking for the passenger.
