The Plane Sailors Favourite Aussie Songs

The Plane Sailors Favourite Aussie Songs

As we round out 2021 Australian emo-inspired-indie-rock The Plane Sailors took some time out of their busy schedule to select their favourite Australian songs. Hopefully these selections can help you curate a banger playlist for the festive season.

  • Kisschasy – Ione Skye
Kisschasy were the first band I encountered that really mastered the juxtaposition between the upbeat music and sad lyrics. That is the underlying theme in most of the music I enjoy today. Their farewell tour was my first proper gig as well, an unforgettable experience.

  • The Beards – This Beard Stays
I was about to drop out of music in high school, but then I got to meet these four bearded gentlemen at one of their shows. They taught me that the quality of music should be measured by how much you enjoy it.

  • Ball Park Music – Nothing Ever Goes My Way
One of the only bands I’ve never had any waning interest in, their music is timeless. Also they are a caring and genuine bunch of people who love what they do, definitely a major inspiration.

  • Karnivool – Themata
Karnivool are the prog icons of Australia, and whether Ian Kenny is singing in Birds Of Tokyo or the ‘vool, he has the voice of an angel. I sometimes suspect half of Joe’s licks are from a Karnivool song.

  • Tim Minchin – The Fence
The ideal hybrid of high and lowbrow humour and sometimes just the cold hard truth. Tim is one of the best at using music to enhance a narrative.

  • Missy Higgins – Steer
Missy has been a great artist to grow up listening to as she’s a great example of sound that has matured and blossomed. Her classy lyricism and catchy hooks can be found at every stage of her career.

  • Frenzal Rhomb – Russell Crowe’s Band
You can tell me these guys suck arse and I’d totally agree, but they still remain one of my favourite bands of all time. They hold the audience in the palm of their hand every live set and half their albums I’d consider a staple of Australian music. Frenzal are culturally and musically timeless.

  • Area 7 – Nobody Likes a Bogan
Move over Cat Empire, it’s Australia’s real #1 ska band. It’s impossible to hate these lovable larrikins and I think we should all aspire to be more involved with the ska lifestyle.

  • Tiny Little Houses – Richard Cory
It’s Elliott Smith but in band form, Tiny Little Houses manipulate sound and lyricism to create a devastatingly expressive discography.

  • The Lucksmiths – T-Shirt Weather
The fast flowing lyricism and walking bass are the foundations of The Lucksmiths’ sound which has generally flowed into most songs by The Plane Sailors.

  • Alex the Astronaut – Happy Song
Although I’ve only recently delved into Alex, she is one of the only Australian artists at the moment that stands out as genuine. She has nothing to hide behind, just expressive and pure songwriting which is refreshing to hear.
