As such the suburb was hit incredibly hard by the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent social distancing measures. In spite of these measures though many business have already rapidly shifted their business models to survive.

For local community members these business evolutions mean that surviving in Surry Hills during social distancing and self isolation doesn’t have to be lonely or dire. In fact it can actually be an enjoyable experience.

City Hub has gathered together a list of the best options for locals to remain safe and healthy during this time.


Heart & Soul – If you’ve been hit with a job loss or significant loss of revenue due to COVID-19 meal preparation service Hearth & Soul is here to help. Hearth & Soul are offering FREE meals to anyone, from any industry, employees and business owners alike, who have suffered job or revenue loss because of COVID-19. To receive a meal they simply ask that people register online, to ensure enough meals are prepared.

For those of people who don’t need to use this service City Hub encourages you to support this great cause by donating to keep the initiative running through the duration of the social distancing measures.


Chin Chin – A staple of the Surry Hills dining experience isn’t going to disappear during the COVID-19 outbreak. Residents can still enjoy Chin Chin’s trademark Australian take on Asian food thanks to their new pick-up and takeaway option.

Chin Chin are also offering 50% off to health care workers between 4-6pm.

Shift Eatery – For the vegan community you’re not left to fend yourself as Surry Hills’ online vegan deli Shift Eatery is now delivering to your door. With a delicious assortment of vegan goods ranging from meat, cheese, milk, coffee, bread & sandwich packs Shift Eatery makes it easy to continue eating healthily while embracing a vegan diet.

Bar Pesta – During this time of the coronavirus, there’s no need to hoard pasta or rice from the supermarket. Instead you can get locally made incredibly pasta dishes delivered right to your doorstep or you can pick-up and takeaway from Bar Pesta. Oh and they have a special takeaway discount of 20% off food or wine and 40% off beer during this period of social distancing.

Big Poppa’s – For the last three years Big Poppa’s have been the venue for late-night pasta, cheese, cocktail, wine and hip hop in Surry Hills. Since the COVID-19 outbreak they have strived to look after the community’s cheese and wine needs (running a free cheese special for several weeks) and delivering wine and branded “Biggie” wine glasses for locals in the area.

In exciting news they are also looking into options for selling some of their best-selling dishes to make at home so that you can enjoy the Poppa’s experience in your living room, until a time they can welcome you back through the doors.



Blooms The Chemist – For all of your medication needs Blooms The Chemist is continuing to trade as normal with the store open until 8m everyday (excluding weekends – Saturday until 7pm and Sunday until 5pm).

Sydney Brewery – Just because you’re locked at home doesn’t mean you have to miss out on your favorite craft beer. Sydney Brewery is continuing to brew their award winning beers, plus they’ve now added home delivery.

To complement their beer offering Sydney Brewery have also pivoted their business model slightly to include drive-thru groceries. So call in on the way home from your ‘essential work’ grab some groceries and a few brews for a relaxing, risk free evening.

Madame Nhu – Friday night happy hour can continue thanks to a relaxation of alcohol laws. Surry Hills residents can pop over to Madame Nhu’s grab a refreshing Vietnamese meal of noodles or pho and some delicious cocktails to take home and enjoy.

Madame Nhu’s is also offering a special 20% discount on takeaway orders.

Brix Distillers – Hand sanitiser is a hot commodity these days, but luckily for Surry Hills residents you don’t have to venture far to get some. Local distillery Brix Distillers, who are most well known for their rums, are now also producing high-quality medical grade hand sanitiser.

Bottles of sanitiser can be purchased individually or you can buy a bottle of rum and get a complimentary small bottle of sanitiser thrown in.
