The Hustle

The Hustle

It’s hard not to bristle at the audacity of daring to remake a classic such as Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, however, this gender-switched effort is surprisingly entertaining and funny.

The scoundrels here are the oddly paired Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway. Wilson, refreshingly, plays Penny, an Australian (dinkum but not crocodile toting) travelling abroad and fleecing unwitting victims of their cash with street-level cons. By chance, she encounters Josephine (Hathaway), a professional swindler at a whole other level. Penny pesters Josephine for mentoring, but the wealthy, territorial high-flyer wants Penny to leave town. To settle the matter, they choose a target whom they will both try and defraud; the winner stays, the loser departs. The target is Thomas Westerburg (Alex Sharp), a young, newly rich app-designer. The characters are all quite likeable, with lots of fun secondary players. Hathaway again proves her comic acumen, while Wilson is in top form.

There are lots of great one-liners and laugh out loud moments.

Good fun.
