Second Act

Second Act

There’s something strangely annoying about this comedy which centers on a woman who obtains a sought-after executive role in a reputable skin care company, through a deceitfully exaggerated resume.

Jennifer Lopez plays the role of Maya, a lady who gave her daughter up for adoption at an early age and who acquires the job of her dreams.

Much of the ‘comedy’ seems contrived, with several embarrassingly bad slapstick comedic moments nonsensically included as a poor attempt to garner laughter.

The ludicrous and incredulous coincidence which propels one of the pivotal storylines involving a chance meeting also detracts and downgrades the film.

Several stereotyped quirky characters provide a few laughs, but the constant reference to skin care products should ensure that most red-blooded males disengage in what can best be described as a chick flick.

Underneath the dull and silly premise, there’s a touching subplot centering on a mother reconnecting with her daughter, which predictably leads to a soppy and painfully sugar sweet conclusion. (MMo)
