Ned: A New Musical

Ned: A New Musical

Audiences should be mesmerised by this original independent theatrical production, which explores the life and untimely death of Ned Kelly, Australia’s most infamous bushranger.

“We follow Ned through his defining life moments – his childhood, being heralded a local hero saving a boy from drowning, his time in jail, the events leading up to him being outlawed, his time on the run and his eventual execution,” explained Cypriana Singh, who plays Ned Kelly’s younger sister Maggie. “This show is an exploration of morality and how people deal with the cards they’re given and how their choices affect others. It’s got a lot of heart and most Australians would know Ned’s story but what is unique about this musical is its exploration of his relationships with his family and the members of the gang.”

But will audiences warm to the story of Ned Kelly as a musical?

“Ned’s story is uniquely Australian. Audiences are bound to relate and enjoy it just through the language and humour and to take one of Australia’s most polarising historical figures and give him a song to sing just humanises a legend.”

Josh McElroy (A Town Named Warboy) portrays Ned Kelly and is joined on stage by Jodie Harris (My Fair Lady) and Marcus Rivera (Miss Saigon) in pivotal roles and a supporting cast of 15 performers. “It was really exciting working with such a talented cast. The girls are always swooning side stage when Josh is singing his numbers and that’s really fun to watch too!” laughed Singh.

This is an Australian story that explores colonial Australia and should appeal to everyone. “All audiences should enjoy this show and engage with Ned before deciding whether he’s a hero or a villain and music theatre fans won’t be disappointed either because the score is beautiful. It’s a wonderfully talented cast that captures the humour, heart, and tragedy of this Australian icon,” concluded Singh. (MMo)
