THE FLIP SIDE

THE FLIP SIDE

We all want Australian films to be successful, but for as long as Aussie filmmakers continue to produce train-wrecks such as The Flip Side, moviegoers shall continue to snub our local cinematic offerings.

This sad little rom-com which stars Eddie Izzard and Emily Taheny, reinforces the difficulty in producing successful comedies and would be a perfect case study for film schools to showcase ‘everything that’s wrong in filmmaking’.

The synopsis had potential – a young lady’s relationship with her boyfriend may be short-lived when her movie-star ex-boyfriend re-enters her life. Add a gorgeous over-sexed French assistant to the mix, romantic entanglements, plenty of alcohol, a road trip to nowhere and the film has all the trimmings for a hilarious sure-fire hit.

However, an uncharismatic cast and a vastly cheesy and embarrassingly unfunny script lacking substance has sealed the film’s fate, ensuring it won’t create a ripple at the all-important box office.

Pathetic attempts at ‘hilarious comedy’ will have audiences laughing at the most inappropriate times and for all the wrong reasons. Underwhelming at best, the redeeming message that ‘love conquers all’ in the final moments of the film is unfortunately too little too late.

One of the characters delivers the line: “You’re not funny Jeff!” Ironically (or should I say hilariously?) nor was the film!! This celluloid fodder is the worst film of the year and has justifiably earned its place in the hall of shame. (MMo)
