Taking place Sunday September 23 at the Event Cinemas in Bondi Junction, the SmartFone Flick Fest features films made entirely on smartphones with two categories, SF3 Kids for filmmakers sixteen and under, and SF3 Shortlist showcasing outstanding films in the open category.

In its fourth year now, the Sydney based international festival will have two masterclasses by Jason Van Genderen, Pocketfilm Academy and #FILMBREAKER Movement. During the masterclasses Genderen will talk about the pros and cons of smartphone cinematography, turning passion into a career with your phone, and teach the audience about ‘Lean-forward’ filmmaking.

Winners will be announced and screened at the Sydney Opera House SP3 Gala on October 1 with winners in 11 categories sharing in a $30,000 prize pool. Some of the judges this year include Louis Nowra, Sue Smithers, Paul Tassone and Nick Hardcastle.

CITY HUB PICKS

#Selfieshot by Narelle Nash from Sydney in ‘selfie’ mode. The short film follows a young self-obsessed blogger filming her stay in a rumoured haunted house. The camera quality was as good as any found footage film with good timing.  ★★★ 1/2

I Hate It  a satirical look into the judgment of film trailers by Ethan Do from Melbourne using a Samsung Galaxy S8, aiming to poke fun at how narrow minded fans can be of a film. Funny because I’m sure we have all acted like this video. ★★★

SCREENINGS: Sep 23. Event Cinema – Bondi Junction, 500 Oxford St, Bondi Junction. $10-$25+b.f.

GALA: Oct 1. Sydney Opera House. Bennelong Point, Sydney. $24-$40+b.f.
