Underground film culture is very much alive with the return of this very unique film festival which screens bizarre, innovative and boundary pushing films.

Festival director Stefan Popescu explained that he has built good relationships over the past 12 years with film directors, producers and distributors who supply the festival with a wacky and diverse program of weirdo films.

The program boasts 42 feature films and 100 shorts. “Our films are adventurous and batshit crazy weird. We try to find the razor edge between entertainment, experimental and weird arse.”

Kiwi produced comedy Mega Time Squad opens the festival followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers and an afterparty with alcohol and food.

“We don’t have VIP areas and shit like that so by the end of the night it’s usually 15 weirdos hanging out with all the filmmakers getting drunk together and having a great time!” laughed Popescu. “We create this loose atmosphere that industry people strangely have started to love”.

But this festival isn’t solely about films. There are filmmaking workshops with the filmmakers themselves and strange yet enjoyable events such as the late-night-all-you-can-eat-cartoon-cereal-party where audiences eat breakfast cereals while watching adult cartoons.

“I’d be very happy to see people in pyjamas but it’s not mandatory.”

Popescu explained that the demographic of audience is between 18-35 years old but there’s older people who come along and join in on the fun. “It’s also suitable for those who have a snobbish palate, feel upper class but whose secret shame is to watch bizarre fucked-up shit!” laughed Popescu.

“This film festival is adventurous, it’s safe and it’s fun. You won’t be disappointed, regardless what you watch. You’ll come out a changed person – for the better of course!” (MMo)
