Mademoiselle Paradis

Mademoiselle Paradis

Shown as part of the German Film Festival, the historical drama Mademoiselle Paradis brings up the ugly truth about being a disabled woman in 18th century rococo Vienna.

Based on a true story the movie tells the story about young Maria Theresia von Paradis (Resi).

Blind but an exceptionally talented pianist she gets the chance to being healed by Dr Franz Mesmer, a forward thinking physician. As she slowly recovers her sight she begins losing her musical gifts and dexterity.

“An ordinary life in bright light or an extraordinary life in the dark?”

Unsure what to choose for her future, Resi’s parents decide whether she will be a staggeringly blind pianist or esteemed ordinary lady.

Well played, this Austrian-German movie represents not only the story of a young blind musician but also points out the gender and social inequalities of late baroque European society.
