THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL – THE WHITNEY HOUSTON SHOW [FULL INTERVIEW WITH BELINDA DAVIDS]

THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL – THE WHITNEY HOUSTON SHOW [FULL INTERVIEW WITH BELINDA DAVIDS]

By Mark Morellini

Belinda Davids is a South African singer who is fronting the tribute show to Whitney Houston, one of the most revered singers idolized by millions around the globe. Davids never had vocal training and her inspirations as a child were Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker and Michael Jackson amongst others.

Davids talks about her career and The Greatest Love Of All – The Whitney Houston Show which she is honoured to be performing in.

TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR CAREER THUS FAR.

I was born in South Africa where I started earning money as a singer in clubs. I had signed to a few record labels when I was younger but they hadn’t worked out. In 2013, I began singing as Whitney Houston in The Greatest Love of All – The Whitney Houston Show. I now travel worldwide to bring the music of Whitney to those who miss her as much as I do.

YOU’RE BRINGING YOUR SHOW OVER TO AUSTRALIA – IS THIS YOUR FIRST TRIP DOWNUNDER?

This will be our second time in Australia. The first time was in 2015 where it was quite emotional for me because the last time Whitney was in Australia she was booed off stage. My main goal was to try and restore her name – hopefully I did!

WHAT FEELINGS DID YOU EXPERIENCE WHEN YOU BEAT 15,000 HOPEFULS FOR THIS ROLE?

I was in complete and utter shock! The process happened so fast and I almost didn’t audition for the role! I had sent 25 emails, had a phone call with the director and that’s when I began my journey with the show.

DESCRIBE YOUR SHOW.

We have a great live band, four amazing dancers, great costumes that resemble Whitney’s style as well as great lighting and effects. We do her greatest hits from the time she started right up until the end, and of course, Whitney will be there at the show.

WHY IS THIS SHOW SO SUCCESSFUL WORLDWIDE?

There are so many people who come together from Showtime Australia to make sure every last detail is managed. It’s the little things that Whitney fans notice and appreciate…which I think sets us apart from other tribute musical acts.

WHY DO YOU THINK THE MUSIC OF WHITNEY HOUSTON IS STILL SO LOVED AND HONOURED AROUND THE WORLD?

She was young, vibrant, and had such an amazingly powerful voice for her age. The world watched her grow and kick goals not only for herself, but her culture. There were just so many things about her that attracted the whole world!

HAD YOU MET WHITNEY HOUSTON BEFORE HER PASSING?

Unfortunately I hadn’t.

IT’S SAID THAT YOU RESEMBLE AND SOUND EXACTLY LIKE WHITNEY HOUSTON. WAS THIS A HINDRANCE TO YOUR EARLY CAREER BEFORE YOU FRONTED THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL – THE WHITNEY HOUSTON SHOW?

Definitely! Vocally, it did stump some career opportunities which was a setback but because I have such a passion for singing and music I didn’t give up!

DOES IT COME NATURALLY TO REPLICATE WHITNEY HOUSTON’S VOICE?

It’s quite hard to distinguish between my natural voice and the voice I use to pay to tribute to Whitney… Because she was such an influence to me I have grown to naturally sing as I do in the show.

WHO WOULD THIS SHOW APPEAL TO?

Anyone and everyone! If you have ever heard a Whitney song, sang a Whitney song or even gotten up to dance to one… this show is for you!
