You get a text. You open it and all it says is a location. Heart pounding, you know that the adventure has begun.

Underground Cinema is a secret immersive film-screening event held in undisclosed locations across Sydney and Melbourne. Given only the theme of the evening, audiences are texted the final location a mere 24 hours in advance – and it could be anywhere from a warehouse to a ballroom to a carpark.

This month, guests have been asked to dress for their desired career trajectory under the genre of sci-fi/thriller.

“I think Sydney-siders are going to love this one. It’s a very sophisticated, enigmatic and stylised world that guests will walk into,” says Tamasein Holyman, Underground Cinema’s creative director.

“World is the key word here because it’s not theatre where you get played to. It’s worlds that you discover and it’s really important for today’s audience to have the ability to explore and partake to the level that they want to. It’s what’s needed in art forms. We’re not passive anymore.“

With diverse programming, Underground Cinema has been pushing the frontier for immersive live performance for the last seven years. Previous sessions have involved audiences partaking in refugee camps and FBI training for screenings of Children of Men and The Silence of the Lambs respectively.

“[This] has the power to lead you to different and unknown opinions and experiences and that’s what good art does. It changes, controls, confronts and it entertains,” says Tamasein. “We’re trying to make good art.”
