looking at me through you

looking at me through you is an exhibition celebrating the diversity of the city of Campbelltown and the greater Western Sydney region by highlighting the growing rate of urban development in the area.

The exhibition aims to change political debates through a cross-cultural narrative and highlights how rapidly the area is changing. Presented by the Campbelltown Arts Centre, 12 artists from the region were commissioned to make socially engaging pieces of art reflecting their own internal and external perceptions and perspectives of Campbelltown and Western Sydney.

City Hub asked curator Megan Monte what themes the artists would be exploring and her response was: “as you may or may not know Campbelltown has a rich history of tragedy and celebration and that’s what I like a lot about the suburb, there’s a huge amount of shifts and changes going on in the community of Western Sydney and we thought it was relevant and timely to present looking at me through you. The broad topic is generally Campbelltown and how we can make a comment or investigate the way Campbelltown is seen and for artists to develop their work”.

Some of the 12 artists showcasing their work are: Abdul Abdullah a seventh generation Muslim Australian painter, Andrew Christie a Campbelltown artist, recent Egyptian immigrant and filmmakers Mona Ibrahim, Sonia Leber and David Chesworth who have collaborated on a video and sculpture installation representing the famous universal power house on top of Mt Universe in Campbelltown and was known in the 70s as the home of the world power society a movement that was designed to make the world a better place.
