T2: Trainspotting

T2: Trainspotting

T2: Trainspotting is the sequel to the 1996 cult classic film of the same name revisiting the original characters as older men and surprise, surprise, they have not changed their criminal tendencies or their addiction to heroine. Danny Boyle is again directing for the sequel and he takes the same indie film approach revealing Edinburgh, Scotland warts and all.

The only difference between the two films is how the characters seem to have fully embraced 21st century developments such as social media and hence Ewan McGregor’s Renton wittily updates, the famous line Choose Life to Choose Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Trainspotting didn’t really need to have a sequel and T2 seems to be just an exercise in appeasing the nostalgic hardcore fans of the original film. It’s the same hideous characters and the same seedy underworld of crime and despair that these four guys don’t seem to have been able to escape from. T2 Trainspotting really could have gone in a different direction and explored genuine character development, so it was disappointing that it chose to rehash a lot of the same old predicaments of the same old bunch of losers from the same old film.
