Rumour Has It

Rumour Has It

Naomi Price (The Voice Australia) comes to town with a six-piece band in her award-winning portrayal of soul sensation Adele. According to Price, audiences should expect a cabaret show like no other: “It’s like having a gin and tonic with Adele. It’s very funny, very honest, very endearing with an amazing soundtrack.”

Having performed the show almost everywhere over the last few years, the secret to keeping it fresh, according to Price, is in the continual rewrites. A large proportion of the show is a commentary on whatever is happening in the world and the stupid things famous people do. “Thankfully,” added Price, “stupid people are always doing stupid things, so there is always something new to laugh about”. Then there are the songs. “We are performing some of the best songs that have been written this century,” said Price. “Think ‘Skyfall’, ‘Someone Like You’, ‘Rolling in The Deep’ – they are all just iconic pop songs.”

Although initially attracted to the music, as Price researched the show, it was Adele the person that won her over. “I just fell in love with her. She is so vivacious – such a down-to-earth normal girl. I think that’s why audiences love her so much. That’s the kind of spirit we try to capture in the show”.

Price admits that as an art form, cabaret holds a special appeal: “I love the fact that it is so dependent on the audience – if they don’t laugh or clap then you can’t actually do the show.” She is quick to add, “You know, I have never even had a mediocre reaction to this show, and I think that is because it has been written with the audience in mind. It is about them and it is for them.” (GW)
