The world renowned Cirque du Soleil not only returned to Sydney this week, but also returns to its roots as it pays homage to the traditions of circus performance with their death defying and colourful show Kooza.

Since its world premiere in Montreal in 2007, Kooza has been seen by over 7 million people around the world. A return to the intimate and fundamental human elements of circus, Kooza combines thrilling acrobatic performance with the art of clowning. Follow “The Innocent” as he takes a journey of self-discovery through a comic kingdom of eccentric characters, electrifying thrills and out-of-the-box surprises.

This production marks performer Aaron Felske’s second time with the company. Felske says he “leapt at the chance to be able to do it again” because his first time around was “a phenomenal experience”.

As part of Kooza, Felske performs as either the Trickster or in the house troupe depending on the night, both of which involve considerable makeup work prior to the show.

“For house troupe it takes me about 45 minutes, but for the Trickster it’s much more complicated, it’s actually one of the most difficult character makeup things to do in all of Cirque, and that takes me almost 2 hours,” he explained.

As Felske explained, Cirque is such a special experience for many of the performers as it incorporates “all of the elements of performance from singing to dancing and acting plus the makeup and extravagant costumes”. (JA)
