A Man With Five Children

Let’s face it – reality TV is everywhere, and we either loathe it or love it. Nick Enright’s A Man With Five Children explores the impact of reality TV and documenting families’ lives through all the ups and downs.
The play follows the lives of five individuals over the course of 28 years, filming them one day each year from the time they are seven. The original plan was to end the series Five Children when they turn 21, but the project is extended to their 35th year.
Director Anthony Skuse says this piece is very moving and theatrical. He added it will also be visually and aurally arresting. He enjoys working with such a large cast and the way the play dances through the years.
“Everything changes and nothing changes. The way the characters move easily from seven to 18 to 35 captures the experience of growing up. You wake up one morning and think ‘I’m 50! How did that happen?’” he explained.
Skuse says the audience will not only enjoy the performance but the building in which the play is taking place.
“We are lucky in Sydney to have a theatre space like the Eternity Playhouse. It is unlike any other theatre space in the city. To draw the best from it, I think you have to engage with its architecture.” (AMal)
