The Hateful Eight

Quentin Tarantino’s eighth film is truly an epic, clocking in at over three hours long for the 70mm offering (which is highly recommended). The film sees eight despicable characters trapped together within Minnie’s Haberdashery as a means of escaping a brutal Wyoming blizzard.

Given the extreme weather conditions for which the film is set, it seems fitting that the story starts out slowly but inevitably gathers rapid momentum and weight, much like a snowball tumbling down a mountainside, before arriving at its impactful end.

The ensemble cast, which has for a large part been drawn from past Tarantino films, all perform stunningly with each character having a deep and nuanced persona. Jennifer Jason Leigh as Daisy Domergue steals the show in almost every scene she is in.

This is very much a signature Tarantino offering, with extremely graphic scenes broken up by moments of dark humour that will have you cringing at yourself for even laughing. The Hateful Eight may not be for everyone, but if you are a Tarantino fan this is a must see. (JA)
