Gurrumul – The Gospel Album

Gurrumul – The Gospel Album

Slowly and steadily, I am immersed into a collective soul. The Gospel Album from Gurrumul is apparently what has previously been missing from my mind (and my ears) without my knowing it.

There is something very consoling in the resulting combination of acoustic guitar and determined vocals, its often slow but deliberate pace is at once captivating and inspirational, making the mind wander into it.

Without knowing the definite meaning of each song (as the musician sings in Yolngu, his indigenous language), the unfamiliar listener is none the less impressed upon with feelings from varying stages of the spectrum, connecting with the soul of the voice alone, especially when it sings without words.

Strongly felt messages are carried across barriers of space and language, in the voice of one and many, leaving an imprint when they fall silent.

The Gospel Album is filled with a translatable spirit of community. (SP)
