Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor visits Australia

Bollywood is coming of age. Not afraid to experiment anymore, the Indian Film Industry and its actors are leaving no stones unturned when trying to prove its existence as a major industry threat to Hollywood. One of its leading stars for over thirty years, actor Anil Kapoor (known globally for his roles in Mission Impossible 4, Slumdog Millionaire and TV series 24) is one such actor.

Kapoor is currently representing India and his movies while visiting Australia as part of a film festival. He talked about his first impressions of Australia, and promoting his new movies Dil Dhadhakne Do and Welcome Back.

“It’s my first visit to Australia,” said Anil. “It’s been so far very good… sense of pride, excitement, I was really choked, I am very happy, thrilled [to be here],” he added.

Bollywood movies have been typecast of late as over-the-top action sagas that demand a certain amount of physicality. Being known for playing characters that are rooted in realism and that he can do complete justice to, this newfound industry aspect of extreme physicality has been challenging for Kapoor.

“What sometimes is tough is the physicality of the role… at a time when a certain role needs that certain kind of physical commitment,” said Anil. “[There have been a lot of] characters I have said ‘no’ to because I feel physically I am not suitable or I will not be able to pull it off,” he explained further.

Not one to back down however, this seasoned and extremely talented actor has brought his latest offering to Australian shores, Welcome Back. Featuring an ensemble cast lead by Kapoor, this action-comedy is a sequel to the 2007 hit Welcome. It tells the story of a group of gangsters and the escapades that ensue when they give up the life of crime and find that they can’t handle honest work. Things get more complicated as they organise a wedding while posing as honest workers, but become intertwined with the underbelly.

“If you see the aesthetics, the story telling and the way it’s been mounted, the way its been performed, I think you can compare it to any film, anywhere in the world,” said Anil.

Dil Dhadhakne Do has already released in Australian cinemas and Welcome Back is set for a September 4 release.
