The Snow Queen

The Snow Queen

Do you find yourself suffering from spasms of intellectual drain when coming across adaptations of classics that refuse to break free from the set stereotypes of ‘happily-ever-after’ and the ‘miss-goody-two-shoes-princess’ that has been typecast to death? Well, there’s good news. The Lane Cove Theatre Company is bringing to stage The Snow Queen, a classic tale of good vs evil by Hans Christian Andersen.

For worshipers of Elsa and sufferers of Disney’s Frozen-mania, here’s a chance at redemption. “There’s love and sacrifice, there’s the battle between good and evil – but the thing is… this isn’t the simple fairytale,” tells Oliver Clisdell, who plays the character of Kai.

Oliver, who is “excited for the experience for future shows”, hits the nail on the head. “It’s all about a girl who has to use all of her strength to save her brother, which I think is very important for children to learn instead of the stereotype of being a princess or a saviour,” explained Oliver.

For Director Trent Gardiner, this production is a fresh and authentic take on the 1884 original story that inspired Frozen. “The quote ‘cold can freeze your heart but love can set you free’ is the central spine that underpins this story,” says Trent.

“(It is) an energetic re-telling of Andersen’s traditional fairy-tale with modern references, enchanting popular music (Billy Joel, Dolly Parton, Madonna, Europe),” says Trent.

There is a new children’s musical in town, and it is here to enchant.

Until August 8. St Aidan’s Hall, 1 Christina Street, Longueville. $15-$25. Tickets: www.trybooking.com/HWLJ
