Don Carlos

Don Carlos

Some performances are worth the wait. Returning to Sydney after 15 years, Verdi’s Don Carlos promises to be a lavish and grand production.

Set at the height of the Spanish Inquisition, the opera tells the dramatic story of the Crown Prince of Spain (Don Carlos) who finds out that the girl he is betrothed to, Elisabeth de Valois, has been sought out to be the bride of his father, Philip II.

“(People) should expect the grand opera at its best! Lots of drama, exciting singing, exquisite music and fantastic staging and costumes with a cast of 200 on stage performing just for you,” says Milijana Nikolic, who plays the role of Princess Eboli.

First performed in 1867 as a five-act grand opera, this modern version by Opera Australia is anchored by revival director Roger Press who is leading an international cast of Diego Torre, Latonia Moore, Milijana Nikolic, Ferruccio Furlanetto and José Carbó.

The opera deals with the themes of surveillance, betrayal and distrust. Diego Torre, who plays the leading role of Don Carlos, feels that these themes define this particular opera“I think they’re very close to the reality… those themes are well justified in the story,” says Diego.

Describing the production simply as “balance”, Diego feels the beauty of this production lies in its “intense music and a first quality cast“. Grand scale, immense sound, breathtaking music and massive cast provide the foundation for this Elijah Moshinsky production.

Until August 15. Joan Sutherland Theatre, Sydney Opera House. Tickets & info: opera.org.au or 9318 8200
