Opera In The Pub

Opera In The Pub

Sydney’s boutique opera company, Opera Bites, provides a new and interesting twist on a traditional medium. Their philosophy is to take popular opera performances reduce them down to a fun, affordable size and combine that with great food and drink in a casual pub setting.

This weekend the company will be implementing this plan with their first ever performance of Mozart’s beloved The Marriage of Figaro at The Dove and Olive in Surry Hills.

Murray Dahm, one of the founding artists of the group, explained the thoughts behind the concept “we responded to the demand for quality opera at an affordable price, Opera Bites aims to present full operas in an accessible 45 minute format. In this way the performance can be equally enjoyable for seasoned opera-goers and newcomers alike.”

By taking the opera out of the traditional Opera House setting Opera Bites makes it much more inviting to the newcomer. “Opera is often viewed as being very serious and elitist but it doesn’t have to be like that. By presenting it in a less formal environment we hope to bring the joy to anyone in an environment they are already comfortable with.” said Dahm.
