The sugar industry generates $50 billion in global trade annually and astonishingly, each family consumes 6 kilograms of sugar in their food and drink weekly. Could sugar which saturates our food at such high levels be a risk to public health?

Actor and director Damon Gameau takes on the challenge of embarking on a 60 day high-sugar diet monitored by nutritionists and doctors, each day consuming foods and drinks perceived as being healthy, all while documenting his every mouthful.

“There was debate and conjecture about the effects of sugar and I wanted to take on the experiment so I could experience it myself”, Gameau explains “The biggest surprise were the mood swings and the effect on my mental faculties.”

Within one month, his weight increased by 5 kilograms and he was on his way to obesity.

After 60 days and 2360 teaspoons of sugar, the results were disastrous and Gameau acquired a deep understanding of the effects of sugar.

“I was inspired to get the message out through this documentary and school campaigns. We decide what foods we put in our mouths – we can make choices” says Gameau.

“This family-friendly documentary has a playful tone and is entertaining. Its purpose is to inspire for a happy and healthier life, instilling hope and not fear”. (MMo)
