Marrickville festival welcomes new Australians

Marrickville Council’s Australia Day citizenship ceremony, annually held in Enmore Park, hosted the NSW Governor and his wife this year.
His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC and Mrs Hurley joined the Council in welcoming new citizens to Australia.
Also present at the ceremony were Member for Heffron Ron Hoenig and Member for Marrickville Carmel Tebbutt.
Ms Tebbutt said Marrickville Council’s festivals were an important part of the community.
“Communities thrive when people feel like they belong.” she said. “A good festival is part of creating that sense of belonging.”
Mayor of Marrickville Councillor Mark Gardiner said the citizenship ceremonies are one of his favourite parts of the job as Mayor.
“Welcoming our newest residents to our local area is very special. It’s even more special on Australia Day – and this year, we also have this honoured guest.” Cr Gardiner said.
President of Local Government NSW (LGNSW), Cr Keith Rhoades AFSM, said that citizenship ceremonies are a big part of Australia Day celebrations and council staff put in a lot of effort to ensure it’s a memorable occasion.
“Welcoming our newest residents to Australia and coordinating citizenship ceremonies on behalf of the Australian Government is one of the most important and valued services that councils provide to their local communities each year, especially on Australia Day,”  Clr Rhoades said.
The festivities kicked off with the citizenship ceremony at 3pm, which also included the Citizens of the Year announcements. The day also included live music and children’s entertainment.
The Australia Day celebrations are the first of several major events the Council hosts throughout the year for members of the community. In previous years Marrickville Council’s celebration also included roving performers, a range of food stalls for different ethnic
