Masterclass

Masterclass

When Gareth Davies heard that someone was doing a masterclass he thought, ‘Why them?’

“There is so much ego just in the word, ‘Masterclass’,” says Davies. “You’ve got to be damn sure that you’re damn good to do one in the first place.” Ego and hubris are ripe, fertile ground for comedy and so Masterclass was born. Having sold out two seasons to popular and critical acclaim they bring their cult, comedy two-hander to The Old Fitz Theatre, kicking off a fresh residency for theatre newcomers, Red Line Productions.

Gareth Davies is the reluctant old master – one of the greatest actors on the planet. Charlie Garber is his lifelong friend, trusted sidekick and servant. Together they take the audience on an hour-long, tongue-in-cheek romp, disarming the pretensions of their craft.

Occupying a long and beloved place in the heart of Sydney’s independent theatre scene, The Old Fitz Theatre – affectionately known to punters as The Old Fitz or The Fitz and formerly known as The Old Fitzroy Theatre – has been a wellspring of creativity. Red Line Productions is determined to bring new energy and ideas to this iconic venue – one of which is a late night open stage where new works can be tested.

In a fitting nod to theatre within theatre, Masterclass is set in January 2015 in The Fitz, bringing new eyes to a new space. “It’s genuinely different,” says Davies. “Hopefully audiences will begin thinking we’re idiots but by the end be surprised and delighted.” (GW)
