City goers in Sydney have been greeted with an unusual addition to a familiar landmark. The obelisk that stands in the junction of Elizabeth Street and Bathurst Street on the edge of Hyde Park has been covered in a giant pink condom to raise awareness for safe sex in the homosexual community.

The work was commissioned by the Aids Council of NSW (ACON) and wraps up the three week ‘IM ON’ campaign to help end HIV transmission in NSW by the year 2020.

Safe sex ambassadors will man the base of the structure and will be handing out information to passers-by for the next two days.

In a statement on the organisations website, CEO Nicholas Parkhill was hopeful that the installation would achieve its purpose.

“We need to constantly find new ways to promote this message, especially in the lead up to World AIDS Day on December 1. We’re hoping to turn lots of heads as well as raise a few eyebrows, not only here on the street but also on social media where the reach of the campaign will be expanded throughout NSW and beyond,” he said.

“The need for gay men to ‘stay safe’ by using condoms is at the core of NSW’s strategy for eliminating HIV transmission by the end of the decade.”

“We won’t be able to achieve this goal unless gay men use condoms when they’re having high-risk sex with casual partners, particularly in situations where a partner’s HIV status isn’t known – it’s that simple.”

The condom will stay in place for the next week.
