Testing will soon begin on the inner west light rail extension, Transport for NSW has informed residents.

The tests are scheduled to take place between 9pm and 4am on weeknights over five weeks from January to March. The overhead wiring on the track between Lilyfield and Dulwich Hill went live on Saturday.

Passenger services are expected to commence in the first half of this year.

Meanwhile, Greens MP for Balmain Jamie Parker is backing a campaign to allow school children to use their travel passes on the light rail network. Only UTS students can obtain concessions on the current light rail network even though it passes close to Sydney University and TAFE colleges.
