GIG REVIEW – AVICII: Jan 25 at Centennial Park, Sydney

The trendies were out in force this week, in their short shorts and singlets, nearly 16,000 people descended upon Centennial Parklands to see the Swedish superstar DJ Avicii.

Throttle was first up, followed by New Wave Sound who played some new tracks from their record under Avicii’s own label. You could tell the duo of Tyrone and Jesse Taylor, 19 and 21 respectively, were thrilled just to be there, their youthful enthusiasm evident as they repeatedly jumped atop of the podium to greet the earlybird crowd.

Next up Will Sparks who seemed slightly more experienced in comparison, was pumped. “Are you ready to bounce Sydney?” he asked the crowd.

Yes they were. Bring it Back and Ah Yeah! were well received but it was Summertime Sadness that had the crowd singing along to the hook, “I’ve got my red dress on tonight”.

Finally, it was Avicii, opening his two hour super-set with the crowd pleaser Hey Brother. It was one hit after another, backed by cool lighting projections and pyrotechnics. He wooed the crowd with Sweet Disposition but it was Swedish House Mafia’s Don’t You Worry Child that really got the crowd going.

Like an omnipresent figure, making the occasional wave to the crowd, he muttered only a few words, “Thank you Sydney, you’re amazing,” before concluding with Wake Me Up.  Avicii did not disappoint. (VP)
