After the jolly red fat man has been and gone, after Christmas jingles are purged from brains and everyone has developed a satisfied gut full of Turkey, puddings and everything in-between; it’s time to call on that reserve bout of energy for the biggest party of the year.

The thought just makes you want to sleep until January, but don’t reserve a side of the bed just yet.

The final night of the year-that-was will surely work off that gluttony and get everyone in the idyllic (and possibly intoxicated) mindset to welcome the next 365 days in style. While everyone else has their eyes to the sky, these are the best gigs to ring in the new year:

La Fiesta Sound System: A night of pulsating drums and Afro percussion with a host of beautiful Brazilian dancers, La Fiesta Sound System will provide party people with fun-loving danceable rhythms as well as DJs Cadell, Matt Roberts and Sista P. A great night in a prime location.

Cruise Bar, Overseas Passenger Terminal, Circular Quay, $299+bf, cruisebar.com.au

The Anthill Mob: The Upperdeck will play host to a different vibe. With The Anthill Mob on decibel duty, this five-piece will be covering the greats from KC & The Sunshine Band to Robbie Williams to Green Day. This will be the perfect pointer to spot the stunning colours through the night sky.

La bohème Gala: The Opera House is offering patrons a night to partake in a NYE celebration that is a tad left of field. If musical productions are your bag, this is the perfect opportunity to get immersed in the arts. Once the performance is over, audiences then have the opportunity to retire to the balcony and behold the atmosphere of our most famous harbour.

NYE On The Harbour: Swing around to the other side of the harbour where a killer show with Aussie DJ duo and EDM legends Bag Raiders will be banging. The boys have chosen to round off their stellar year after releasing their debut album accompanied by Art Vs Science, Van She, Alison Wonderland plus some more stellar electro gods. Get in now. Cargo Bar, Darling Harbour, from $89+bf, cargobar.com.au

CelebrationNYE: DJ Dan Murphy will be pitching the audible with the visual as the New Year is bought in with some perfect pieces from today’s greatest artists. With an abundance of cocktails, canapés and pyrotechnical debauchery, this night is a mixture of Murphy’s remixes spinning throughout the night and the official medley playing at the climax of the evening.

Sydney Museum of Contemporary Art, Circular Quay, from $460+bf, mca.com.au

Wonderlust: With a host of musical maestros yielding their decks, this will create the perfect soundtrack to the setting sun over the far side of the harbour. With a fiery DJ set from Tokyo Denmark Sweden, plus appearances from Dolso, Hatch and Chicks on Deck, the night will provide all the atmosphere in a position slightly further afield.

Watson’s Bay Boutique Hotel, Watson’s Bay, from $99+bf, watsonsbayhotel.com.au

Lost & Found: George Street’s plush pad Ivy Bar will be graced by the headlining presence of Danny Tenaglia. With a host of top notch musical royalty remixes like Depeche Mode, Madonna and Faithless, Tenaglia will be on deck duties for a solid five-hour set. He will be joined by none other than Irish charmers Bicep, Vancouver’s R&B meddler Cyril Hahn and Simple Records ruler Will Saul.

Ivy Bar, George St, from $114.95+bf, merivale.com.au/ivy

NYE Toga Party: In our unique cultural heartbeat of Newtown, the toga will be out to impress potential Cleopatras. A dream party band to rock the foundations with classic tunes to get revellers in the Caesar mindset. Musicians Mojo Juju, Jeremy Davidson of The Snowdroppers plus many more will yield their instruments in true Roman style to avoid any potential blood baths in their colosseum.

The Vanguard, Newtown, $63.80+bf, thevanguard.com.au

Wasted New Years: Oxford Street provides the opportunity to get a bit of punk rock and golden party anthems into the earholes with this line-up of audacious Aussie acts. DZ Deathrays and Step-Panther are just two of them but the choices don’t stop there. Kick it in The Chill Chamber, go bat-shit party crazy in 34B or take a trip down to the Vegas room for some hardcore head-banging action.

QBAR, Oxford St, Darlinghurst, from $15+bf, qbar.exchangesydney.com.au

New Years Eve in this beautiful city is not only about showing off skilled pyrotechnics to the world, but a chance to celebrate in some of Sydney’s most thriving venues. With so many options to choose from, revellers are destined to have a great night. (CD)
