The Darkside is a collection of stories that explore the space between life and death, but calling them ‘true ghost stories’ really tests the elasticity of the imagination.

Director Warwick Thornton combines original recordings with monologues performed by some of Australia’s top actors.

There’s no denying that these people experienced something unusual and the effects were profound. However, surely even the most open-minded viewer noticed one-too-many “…and then I woke up” comments to believe the stories are coming from anywhere conscious.

Many of the stories recount symptoms of sleep paralysis or lucid dreaming; topics which are interesting enough in themselves, but when retold under the thinly veiled guise of a ‘true’ ghost story, lose all integrity.

When the credits roll and viewers see that the ‘true’ stories were told by actors, well, that does it. (AE)
