Hold on to your internet because if you don’t, Alex Cameron might take it from you and smack you across the face with it.

“The music scene is falling to pieces,” he says when asked about why he decided to release his solo album, Jumping the Shark, on his purpose-made label. The all-too-familiar story of digital downloads, and “arsehole labels who sell any music as ‘alternative’,” pushed Cameron to go out on his own.

“I sent my record to at least eight labels and none of them wanted it. I don’t trust anyone with my creativity,” says Cameron.

“I’d rather ride my own quad bike and fly my own flag off the back of it, you know? Complete creative control.”

Jumping the Shark dives into issues of guilt and humiliation in a world where everyone else is to blame for the contemporary showbiz industry’s failure. Dark, deadpan and beautifully synthy, the music is built around the words, and if you don’t listen to the words, you’ll “drop right off the side of the world” playing audio-association games.

The album is begrudgingly available as a free download for a limited time, but “vinyl will be available at shows for anyone with substance,” says Cameron. (AE)

Jumping the Shark is available for free Nov 22, alexcamerononline.net.au
