The Milk Carton Kids’ third album is a deftly plucked, harmonised skip through the honey-coated folk genre.
Uptempo but still relaxed, songs like Hope of a Lifetime and the title track, The Ash & Clay, evoke warm thoughts that are equal measure longing and contentment.
Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan have been making music together for years and the depth of harmony from just two voices is wonderful.
It is twelve tracks of similar arrangements but each one is precise and links the album like a square on an old patchwork quilt. Worn but comforting. (LL)
