SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE’S 40TH ANNIVERSARY

The 40th anniversary of one of Australia’s most famous landmarks and iconic cultural venues – the Sydney Opera House – is being celebrated with a month-long series of events culminating in a lavish outdoor twilight concert.
The western foyer of the Sydney Opera House will house Danish Design at the House, a contemporary design installation curated by architects Gerard Reinmuth and Karen Kjærgaard.
David Moore’s acutely sensitive photographs of the daring and genius Jørn Utzon’s architectural masterpiece will feature in a free photography exhibition at Customs House.
The general public are also invited to enter the heart of the building and explore the world-renowned wood panelled and cathedral ceiling Concert Hall or walk the intimate stage of the Joan Sutherland Theatre.
The extensive program of events ends with the 40th Anniversary Concert. It will feature an exceptional line-up of artists, including Deborah Mailman as master of ceremonies, Baz Luhrmann, Sarah Blasko, John Butler, Megan Washington, Paul Grabowsky and members of the Wharf Revue.
“We’ve selected some of the best classical and contemporary musicians to perform in the 40th Anniversary concert,” says the concert’s artistic director Dennis Watkins.
“While we recognise our artistic triumphs of the past four decades, we are also looking towards the future and our continued relationship with outstanding Australian performers. This is why we’ve included artists such as Megan Washington and Sarah Blasko.”
Recognising the links between Australia and Denmark, Denmark’s Crown Prince Couple, HRH Crown Prince Federik and HRH Crown Princess Mary, will be the honoured dignitaries and special guests, along with members of architect Jørn Utzon’s family.
The concert will close with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra performing the work that opened the Opera House in October 1973, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, featuring soloists from Opera Australia and the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs. (CN)
