ROBERTO ZUCCO

The opening of Roberto Zucco was a surprisingly thrilling night of theatre at the beautifully quaint Old Fitz in Woolloomooloo. The iconic French play, written by mastermind Bernard-Marie Koltès and translated by Martin Crimp, is the tale of a charismatic and beautiful Italian psychopath who kills both his parents and escapes from prison multiples times. Zucco encounters situations and people only the intimate platform of the stage and Anna Jahjah’s focused direction can satisfactorily bring to life.

The suave and talented Tim Cole plays a tormented yet somehow apathetic Zucco. His range is brilliant, complemented by equally fascinating performances including the always-hilarious Lyn Pierse, French newcomer Delphine Vuagnoux as the panic-stricken prostitute, and a disturbingly touching performance by Kristy Jordan as a woman Zucco takes along for the ride.

Roberto Zucco is a highly recommended piece of drama. It captures the sensibilities of the audience from the beginning and drags them into Zucco’s disturbing journey of murder, violence and love. (MH)
