It’s that time of year again when the weather heats up and the Newtown Festival rolls in. Now in its 35th year, the festival is set to be bigger than ever.

With local headliners such as Dappled Cities, The Snowdroppers and Tuka and the Basement Big Band, the typical Newtown flavour will be there.

“We’ve also got a band from New Zealand, two from Melbourne and there’s a band from Brisbane,” says Newtown program and marketing manager, Nathan Farrell.

“It’s a nice cross-section. It’s cool that those guys got the spirit of the event,” he continues.

There’s hip hop crew Home Brew from New Zealand, Melbourne-based Oscar Key Sung, Nicky Bomba and Friends and reggae outfit Kooii from Brisbane.

There’ll be 300 stalls, the Festival Kids and Family Zone and the annual dog show.

“I’ve been going to Newtown Festival for about eight years. I love wandering around eating, there’s the Writer’s Tent and heaps of stalls,” says Farrell.

“We’re really thrilled to be involved with the 35th year,” he says.

“I can’t wait to have a beer and watch some great music.”

Attendance is worth a gold coin donation, with all proceeds going to the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre. (PG)
